A Happy Holiday HomeSafe Story

A Happy Holiday HomeSafe Story

Max, our 13-year-old Shepherd/Husky-cross, ran away from home on December 17th. The last time we saw him, he was running toward the bush behind our home. My partner and I followed what we thought were Max's tracks through the fields and bush for two hours without setting eyes on our dog.

Our search was was very frustrating. We eventually become separated ... and, miles from home, I fell in the frozen field and sustain a knee injury. I was driven home by a kind woman whose backyard I finally found myself in.

As soon I returned home I posted a missing dog report on PetLynx. Then, I spent a very long, very sad weekend thinking that old Max  -- who's sight and hearing are very poor -- had either frozen to death or may have been attacked by coyotes.

My partner never gave up hope that Max would find his way home. Eventually, he did .... but not on his own!

A school teacher had spotted Max walking down the middle of the highway, being dodged and honked at by passing traffic. She loaded him into her car and took him to the Dundas Animal Hospital were they sheltered him and searched for his owner. They found our report on PetLynx and called me Monday morning.

We are so grateful to ...
the woman who drove me home when I hurt my leg,
the teacher who rescued Max off the highway,
the people at Dundas Animal Clinic who cared for Max,
and the people at PetLynx for helping Max get home ... safe!

You are all truly Christmas angels and we cannot thank you enough!!!!
        Merry Christmas

Injured Dog Struggles to Raise Litter of Five: Four Puppies and One Kitten!

At  PetLynx  Corporation we LOVE happy endings! So we are thrilled to share this amazing story from Edmonton, Alberta, of how love and family are important .... especially at Christmas!

She was a young, homeless single mom trying to raise her puppies, but true to the spirit of the season there was room for one more...

The badly injured  German Shepherd-cross was caring for her newborn puppies — and a kitten — on a central Alberta reserve when she was found by rescue volunteer Criss Gerwin.

Gerwing took the entire family to the Edmonton Humane Society, where veterinarians thought they'd have to amputate the mother dog's bad leg. But local vet, Dr. Milton Ness, Capilano Veterinary Clinic, volunteered to do a special surgery that saved her hind quarter.

The dog is expected to fully recover.  She, her puppies and her kitten may soon be available for adoption. Her new name -- Esperanza -- bodes well for her and her furry family's future — it means "hope" in Spanish.

Check out this amazing rescue story in the Winnipeg Free Press

Holiday Safety for Fluffy and Fido

Christmas can be a hazardous time for our animal companions. You may think the possibility of a problem is remote, it isn’t. Veterinarians see many dogs that succumb to avoidable conditions. By being aware of the risks, you can take precautions.

Check out this article in Dogs in Canada magazine to find out how chocolates, rich food, plants and more could put your pet at risk during the festive season.

Dog Rescues Human

In the spirit of love and compassion that is the foundation of the Christmas season, we share the following adoption story as a way to acknowledge and thank people across Canada who work tirelessly to rescue and re-home lost, abandoned and abused animals.

In the companion animal industry we always talk about humans adopting animals... but in many cases it is the animals who give unconditionally of their love and are our salvation. Enjoy this adoption story from an dog's point of view!

Merry Christmas from PetLynx Corporation
I RESCUED A HUMAN TODAY.

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her. I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn't be afraid.

Lost Cat Returned to Family after 2-1/2 Months

Another heart-warming HomeSafe story!

Saturday evening of the Labour Day long weekend I saw an orange cat hanging around in the dark in a big parking lot at a mall. I happened to have a can of cat food with a flip lid in the car, so I laid an open can down for him. He scurried right over and gobbled it up.

The cat was so hungry I knew that he must be lost... so I took him home, kept him safe in my garage, then posted his information on PetLynx and Kijiji. I knew I couldn't keep him as I already have three cats of my own.

If I couldn't find the owner, I had planned to take him to a neighbourhood vet clinic on Tuesday morning. On Monday, I received a welcome phone call and at 7:00 that night a man came over and identified the cat as 'Oliver'. His family was ever so grateful to have him back as he had been missing for two and a half months and they had assumed their much loved cat was dead!

I have since heard back from the family and was relived to hear that Oliver had settled back in nicely. Thank God for PetLynx! I had never used this service before. We have rescued and found homes for a number of cats over the years.... but this time it was so easy because of PetLynx! God bless you for your filling a much needed void the SPCA just can't match!

Hooray! Deb E.

Lost, then Found, Thanks to PetLynx

Asha is a 9 year old, Shih Tzu but she looks and acts like a puppy. She has come to work with my husband and me since we opened our office in 2005. Our patients have come to expect seeing her as soon as they walk through the door, and as you might expect, Asha looks forward to seeing them, too

The day Asha went missing from our office was, by far, one of the worst moments of my life. We have had Asha since she was a puppy and I panicked at the thought of never seeing her again. Of course, worst case scenarios immediately ran through my head!

Companion Animal Industry Embraces Change

5th Annual Summit for Urban Animal Strategies leaves delegates feeling optimistic

Collective compassion and a forward-thinking spirit of collaboration was the foundation for discussions at the 5th Annual International Summit for Urban Animal Strategies (ISUAS) held at Lake Louise, Alberta, 13 – 16 October 2010.

Over the course of the four days, more than 80 delegates attended a series of presentations, networking sessions and an open forum that provided opportunities to share ideas, set goals, form new alliances and consider various strategies to develop National Codes of Conduct for homing animals in urban municipalities. The event was deemed a great success with delegates from across Canada returning to their respective communities full of enthusiasm and optimism that the state-of-the-art in urban animal strategies is about to undergo a revolutionary change.

The overall success and spirit of collaboration fostered at the Summit can be summed up by comments received from delegates:
  • The Summit is always a highlight for the year for our organization!
  • I come away from the Summit rejuvenated and ready to tackle new projects.
  • Networking is extremely important to further improve our own programs. It provides the   opportunity to see what works … and what does not.
  • Right people, right info, right time!  We are poised to work together to have true impact.I look forward to everyone reporting on our accomplishments at the next Summit.
  • Hats off to the PetLynx team for creating the environment and opportunity.
  • This was the best Summit to date and reflects a growing respect within the industry.

Australia Proposes Tough New Pet Purchasing Law

Children under the age of 18 will no longer be able to buy pets without their parents' permission in Victoria (Australia) if the Brumby government is re-elected.

RSPCA Victoria president Hugh Wirth said he was "thrilled" with the government's election package of animal protection measures, which includes a ban on selling pets to minors.

Dr Wirth said the change would make it illegal for children to buy pets without their parents' permission and sellers could face fines of between $1000 and $2000 for doing so.
"The reason we requested the government to do that is by law at age 18 everyone is deemed to be mature enough to make a positive decision and be accountable for that decision," he said today.

Cats need our help ... this is the help they need!

THE OPPORTUNITY: Care for Cats and the Year of the Cat are the first major initiatives resulting from ideas born at the International Summit for Urban Animal Strategies. This national program will enable all sectors of the companion animal industry to work together to tackle the cat overpopulation crisis while raising the social status and value of cats in our communities.

Care for Cats is a long-term project that will respond to the cat overpopulation crisis by creating and distributing public education programs and support materials, encouraging community collaboration across all industry sectors; providing accurate resources; and collecting and evaluating national metrics to measure success.

We cannot expect to completely solve the cat crisis in a single year. Care for Cats was formed ... Year of the Cat is its first project.
Launch date: January 2011.

More Short & Sweet HomeSafe Stories

At PetLynx we love HomeSafe stories that tug at our heart strings or make us smile ... but we appreciate receiving 'Readers' Digest'-style condensed versions of your success stories, too! Here are some recent snippets from the E-files:

Our cat Bella came home after being lost for 48 hours. My daughter did some Internet research and discovered that it is better to look for a lost cat at night. Her persistence paid off! After going outside a few times and calling her name, Bella came running to her from a few houses down. We are so happy to have her home! Thanks for letting us post our precious Bella on the PetLynx site.

    •    animal control and legislative enforcement,

    •    animal health and wellness, and
    •    animal services.

Winners were determined by current ISUAS delegates and alumnus in good standing who cast their ballots via a confidential computerized voting system.

Dixie is HomeSafe in Regina

Dixie, a 13-year old Border Collie/Sheltie cross had a lot of people very worried when she slipped  out a gate and ran away. Perhaps she was disoriented considering that there was plenty of action at the home at the time. There were construction workers in the yard, the family was on vacation and a relative was caring for the dog!

A call to the Regina Humane Society directed the dog's caregiver to the PetLynx website and she says it was very helpful. Thankfully, the run-away was apprehended within the hour ... so this HomeSafe story has a very happy ending!

Cats Comfort Breast Cancer Patients

People and Pets HomeSafe

When the words "pink" and "cat" are used in the same sentence, it's usually referring to a kitten's nose. But this October, "thinking pink" and talking about cats takes on a whole new meaning, thanks to the folks at Purina Cat Chow!

Recognizing the remarkable bond between cats and breast cancer patients, this October, Purina Cat Chow is making a contribution to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation for every specially-marked product sold. The target goal is $100,000.

According to Susan Molenda, vice president of marketing for Nestle Purina PetCare, "The support and comfort cats provide during these difficult times reinforces the important role pets play in our lives and to society, and we are pleased to lend our support to this worthy cause."

An iPad App for Pets? You bet!

O.K. ... we know this has nothing to do with lost and found pets ... but at PetLynx Corporation we like to encourage pet families to have fun and strengthen the bond they share with their animal companions!

Own on iPad? Share your home with a lap cat? Then here is something fun you can try to keep your cat occupied on a cold winter night! (Not sure if many dogs would be willing to get in on the action!)

DolfBall is a straightforward, addictive, time-killing game you can play with your friends - OR - your pets on your iPad! Yes, there is actually a "Pet Mode" - the first of its kind for an iPad app. And it's free on iTunes and already getting a bunch of chatter.

The game was invented by a guy named Dofl Y.H. Yun - a senior developer at one of NY's top digital agencies, Firstborn.  Pretty hilarious.  Especially if you have a cooperative pet.

Click here to view a kitty playing DolfBall on an iPad ... even though he (or she) is a little camera shy. :)

PetLynx Makes a Match ... Before Newspaper Ad was Published!

If this dog's guardian had updated her contact  information and been registered with PetLynx, this dog would have been HomeSafe in under an hour ... But, thanks to PetLynx, this story still has a happy ending!

My husband and I saw a sweet little dog crossing a busy road on its own. We turned around right away to rescue it and watched in horror as she was almost hit by a car! Lucky for everyone, she survived that encounter and we picked her up safely on the other side of the road. She was wearing a collar and license tag so I called the city pound, but the information on her tag had not been updated.

Concerned About Pet Overpopulation?

Consider "Fixing 'em while they're young"

At PetLynx Corporation we are committed to ensuring all pets have HomeSafe homes. That's why we want to share this importance resource addressing the topic of pediatric spaying and neutering of puppies and kittens. This could very well be a big part of the solution to North America's homeless pet overpopulation problem!

PetSmart Charities has an educational video that will help reduce homeless pet overpopulation by training veterinarians on how to perform spay/neuter surgeries on puppies and kittens as small as two pounds and as young as 6-8 weeks old.

The Dog is Fine ... But Beware of the Driver!

This dog is a dangerous distraction!
At PetLynx, our goal is to help get (and keep) pets HomeSafe ... and we were surprised to learn that a recent study revealed that 2/3 of dog owners admit to engaging in distracting activities with their dogs while driving!

Dogs are wonderful companions and can be fun to bring along for a car ride. However, this can mean added distractions for the driver. A recent survey conducted by the American Auto Association (AAA) asked dog owners how often they drive with their dog and about their habits behind the wheel.

The survey found that drivers not only love to bring Fido along, but they also often engage in risky behaviors when man's best friend is along for the ride.

Puppy Owner Thinks "PetLynx is Awesome!"

My five-month-old border collie X puppy, Kimowan, slipped through an open gate or under the fence... and was only gone for a few minutes when I noticed she had escaped.

After a quick search of the neighborhood, I Googled the Internet for help in finding her.  I was directed to the Edmonton Humane Society and then to PetLynx. I registered  with PetLynx, uploaded a picture, and right away it showed me potential matches with pictures and descriptions of dogs that fit my dog's description.

Unfortunately, Kimowan was not in those matches but I looked through the other pictures and Viola!, there she was! I was delighted and relieved that someone had posted a photo on PetLynx so quickly.

Previous to losing Kimowan, I did not know about Petlynx ... but I do now and will refer any of my friends if they ever lose their beloved pets. We are very happy that Kimowan is home safe and happy! PetLynx is awesome!

Thanks sooooo much for helping me find my puppy.

One Cat, Two Cats, Black Cat, New Cat?

Look-a-Like black cats cause this pet family double trouble!

Nellie the cat went missing one Monday but it was day or so before this pet family realized it because their two cats look exactly the same, go outside at will and rarely hang out together. It was Wednesday morning before they realized they were missing one cat!

"I contacted the Animal Shelter who directed me to PetLynx," explained Margaret F. "I provided a description on PetLynx and got regular reports of similar found cats. I went to the Animal Shelter on Thursday to look at the cats there but didn't see our Nellie. However, the young woman at the Shelter told me of a black cat that had been found injured in my area and taken to a local veterinary clinic."

Lama's Lost & Found Tale

Lama is a middle-aged Shih Tzu. Her family left for a holiday in Europe, having made arrangements for the dog to have a holiday of her own with friends. The designated dog-sitters, however, were away for the first couple of days, so Lama went to another friend's home for the August long weekend. As luck would have it, when Lama was put outside for a few minutes on Friday night she squeezed under the fence and disappeared!

Mass hysteria amongst all family friends ensued. We called the Burlington Humane Society and Animal Rescue and put up posters, registered on PetLynx and called the local veterinary clinics. It was a holiday weekend, so mostly we had to leave messages, no comfort in that! We waited....

More Short & Sweet HomeSafe Thank You Notes

We are thrilled to report that Sheba was found and is now home.... safe. Her recovery was directly related to the PetLynx lost photo album. Thank you very much for your efforts and service!
Sincerely yours,
    Bea H.

Yeah!! My cat Jemmy is at home safe and sound.  She tends to go off on her own to escape all the rescue cats I have in my home and garden. I hadn't seen her for a few days and was really worried that she was hit on the road and I didn't know. She came home later that evening looking for her dinner. Thanks to everyone who tried to help me find her. There were several matches from the pound site, I feel so sorry for the ones that don't get rescued or returned home. :(

Our much-loved pet, Mushka, has been found thanks to a really nice family!!! Thank you PetLynx for being there for us!

• Registered entities rose to 515,069, made up of 251,634 pets and 263,435 associates

'Toast' Pops Up to Enjoy Some Iams Cat Food!

'Toast' is the epitome of the ideal cat – pleasant, affectionate, patient and quiet,  with an expression of satisfied contentment 24/7. She pops in and out all day, but one afternoon earlier this summer, I got concerned when I hadn’t seen her in a few hours.  I called her name and my son and I walked the neighbourhood looking for her. There was no sign of her anywhere!

I went on the Parkland County Animal Control website. They have a link to the PetLynx website and I registered Toast as missing. In the meantime, we also placed ads in the newspaper and put up posters in the neighborhood. After seven days, Toast returned. She looked relaxed and somewhat mystified by the elated reaction of my son and I! To celebrate her safe return we opened a can of tuna fish and I went out and got a bag of IAMS (her favourite cat food).

Look-a-Like Lost Cats Equals Double Trouble!

This unusual PetLynx HomeSafe story is an excellent example of why all companion animals  should have some form of permanent identification, such as a tattoo or microchip.
"We were elated when we thought we had found our domestic long-haired cat, Lulu, in a backyard just three houses down from ours," wrote Nina S. of Calgary "She appeared nervous, hungry and thirsty, but otherwise healthy. We considered that 'Lulu' may have became disorientated after being chased into a hiding spot and then had no idea how to get home again.

"But there was something in the shape of this cat's face,... the density of her coat and the way she reacted to our dog made us doubt ourselves. Was this really our Lulu, we wondered? It sure looked like her but...."

PetLynx Results in Immediate Action!

I found the PetLynx website after my cat, Tilley, became lost. I have been down this road before with a lost kitty and I know about the sleepless nights spent wondering and the heart sick feeling spending days hoping... comforting children and pretending to be hopeful while imagining good endings.

Almost immediately after posting Tilley's information on PetLynx, I viewed the 'found' listings and there he was! Thankfully, Tilley is now happily at home ... and my heart is not apart. Thank you so much for this service! PetLynx is outstanding and has taken away what could have been days of searching and sadness.

Thank you!

Little Bird Lost .... HomeSafe, Thanks to PetLynx Poster

Dear PetLynx;

My name is Jonas and I am a cockatiel. My family was heartbroken when I got scared and flew out the door ... and they couldn't find me. A pet is part of the family and they missed me so much!

The next day my guardians gave the City of Hamilton Animal Control a copy of the 'Lost Bird' poster that they printed using the PetLynx website.

Lost Your Pet? Register FREE for 7 Days!

"I wanted to thank you for the PetLynx website. My indoor cat went missing two weeks ago and, while he is not back yet, I want you to know that registering with PetLynx and checking with your site has helped. You do good! It was very reassuring too, to be able to register free for seven days! It was one less thing to worry about in the beginning and then come back later with a clearer head.
